Kerala is a land blessed with many rivers and crisscrossed by umpteen backwaters. This gives the land a unique beauty. The backwaters are the lifeline of the people living nearby and an enchanting spectacle for the visitors. Backwaters are one of the best routes of transportation in Kerala.

The State has around 1,687 km of navigable waterways, with the West Coast Canal alone constituting 560 km of this network, he said. The Centre has taken over 205 km of the West Coast Canal as part of its National Waterways project.

Inland Water Transport (IWT) is an inexpensive, non-polluting and energy-efficient means of transport. It can easily carry a portion of the passenger and goods traffic that now relies on road and rails
